San Mateo County, also referred to as The Peninsula, covers most of the area to the south of San Francisco. It’s been a booming suburb for people commuting to the City for probably the last 100 years, and will likely continue to be so. Local folks are acutely aware that there’s a big difference between Palo Alto, and the little Mexico of East Palo Alto. Or between tony Redwood City, and poor East Redwood City.
San Mateo County is definitely is a profile of contrasts. One one side you’ve got the Silicon Valley mega rich mansions tucked away in the hills of Atherton, Los Altos Hills, Woodside, and Hillsborough. The incredible wealth generated by Facebook (Menlo Park) and YouTube (San Bruno) alone are unparalleled. And as a result there’s also a huge Bay Area income disparity. The Entryway to San Francisco After landing at SFO, San Francisco bound visitors usually head north on the Bayshore Highway thru San Bruno and Brisbane to get to the City. And prominently displayed on the hillside is that historic welcome sign - “South San Francisco the Industrial City”. Local SSF residents will sometimes joke there’s not much else that’s notable about their town ... although Brisbane does have an informative, and free, walking tour. Just 16 miles south of SF and straddling the bay on one side and the hills on the other, stands Millbrae. Millbrae has it’s lovely areas but unfortunately has had an upswing in property crime lately. Burlingame, aka the “City of Trees”, abuts Millbrae on its southern end. An area we have always liked and highly recommend is the Coyote Point Recreation Area, which is home to the must visit Coyote Point Beach. The waterfront communities of Foster City and Redwood Shores are home to some great neighborhoods, shopping streets, and lots and lots of apartments. These areas were mainly built on landfill, and well, if the sea level rises, they are sunk! Depending on the specific neighborhoods, both Belmont and San Carlos have a crime rate slightly above the national average. Then again, Belmont, where most of the town is in the hills, is a little cheaper than San Carlos, and is rated as one of the best places to live. So go figure. Redwood City has a few must see and do’s: the Pulgas Water Temple, the simple beauty of Redwood Shores, Sequoia High School’s impressive Japanese Tea Garden. Oh, and and then there’s the infamous Redwood City Jail. Ok, maybe you can pass on that! And last but not least, let’s not forget the Pacific Ocean side: come down highway 280 South from SF and the first stop is Daly City, home to the enormous Serramonte Shopping Center, and the seemingly ever-present coastal fog. Hit the coast and stop in at Pacifica, then Half Moon Bay. The beach there makes for a leisurely afternoon family picnic, and there are great cafes in town as well. Swimming though, in the Northern California ocean without a hardy constitution is an iffy proposition. And I would certainly pass on surfing at Maverick’s Beach if you’re not a world class competitor.
