Napa is known for its wines but it wasn’t always that way. For most of its modern history it was mainly farmland. The switch to viticulture started in the late 1800’s and really took hold in the 1960’s. The ancient volcanic soil makes the land extremely fertile and in fact gives Napa Cabernets its “Rutherford dust” distinctiveness. Napa’s history is actually quite fascinating and worth checking out.
Napa is a great place to live: the weather, amenities and the quality of life in general are excellent. A fun way to explore it is on a bicycle; the Drycreek - Oakville loop is only about 24 miles and makes for a pleasant beginners trip. If you don’t have your own bike there are of course numerous group bicycle tour companies that can help. Hiking opportunities are plentiful. A sort of easy and quite scenic 5 mile day hike, and probably our favorite, is the Stevenson Memorial Trail at Robert Louis Stevenson Park: You’ll love the views when you get up to the peak of Mount St. Helena. For the less athletic types there is always the Wine Train. Even more thrilling are the ballon and glider rides. You haven’t experience Napa until you’ve made a hard landing at the end of balloon ride and get ejected from the basket upon landing, like we did years ago! Also, most people don’t realize how unexpectedly noisy it can be in the cockpit of a glider. Either option is an exciting way to see the Napa Valley. Lazy types can opt for the simple car ride “upvalley” via Highway 29, stopping at the towns of Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena. End it at Calistoga with a visit to the hot springs and the Petrified Forest and call it a day.
