Contra Costa County, CA

Contra Costa County Junk Removal

Contra Costa, in Spanish, means “the coast opposite” from (San Francisco). Originally it was an even much larger county, that is until the mid 1800’s, when what’s now Alameda County was carved out from it. Contra Costa County still extends over such a large area that it’s hard to make grand generalizations about livability or quality of life; the flatlands of Richmond are a far cry from the hills of Moraga, in more ways than one.
The western side of the county is a convenient launching off spot for SF City commuters, has a more industrial / commercial vibe and is home to a more diverse community. El Cerrito is a bit of an unglamorous town - but if you’re a dog lover you should really check out Arlington Park, where they have picnic tables and nice views to boot. The ultimate in dog park heaven though is Point Isabel Dog Park, right off Highway 580: trust me, your dog will thank you for it and you will have a blast too!

If you are looking to be a tour guide for out of town guests, a fun day trip could be heading up highway 80 and make lazy stops all along the way, sampling the towns of San Pablo, Pinole, Hercules, Rodeo, Crockett. End up at the quaint little seaside town of Port Costa and consider staying overnight at the historically infamous Burlington Hotel. (In the old days it was rumored to be a well known house of ill repute!)

Further down the highway is Martinez, where you can visit the John Muir house. Continue on to Pittsburgh and Antioch if you are feeling really ambitious. Or just call it a day.

The Tunnel to the East Bay
You'll also notice it gets quite a bit hotter as you leave the bayside areas, especially once you get on the other side of the Caldecott Tunnel and keep heading east on Highway 24.  Just a heads up.

On the east side of The Tunnel your first stop is the twin towns of Orinda and Moraga. Like most of the communities on this side of Contra Costa County, they are affluent and are rated as among the best places to live in California. All tend to have top school districts, amenities, high quality of life indexes. And real estate values to match. Take in a matinee at the Orinda Theatre and while you’re there, visit our favorite lunch spot nearby, Shelby’s, right down the street.

Walnut Creek (aka “the Jewel of the East Bay”) has of course got the requisite high end shopping, restaurants and a high score on the Livability Index. Nature lovers will appreciate the simple beauty of Mount Diablo State Park. Don’t forget to pack water though if you are planning on doing any extensive hiking there in the summer. For those with young kids there’s Pixieland, and the Six Flags water park in nearby Concord.
If you are seeking quiet suburban bliss, you can’t beat the bedroom communities of San Ramon, Alamo, Dublin, Danville, and Pleasant Hill. Slightly off the beaten path and at the higher end in price, you’ve got Blackhawk, known for it’s exclusive gated communities.

Free Junk Removal Resources for Contra Costa County
Like most Bay Area counties, Contra Costa is trying to be as Green as possible, and offers some free junk pickups for most residential households. We have found however, that it can vary somewhat from city to city, so it is best to check with the local city government website for details. It seems however, that you may be entitled for up to 3 free bulky item pickups a year, which is actually one of the more generous terms we've seen for Bay Area residents.
