Marin County has it all: beautiful scenery, Redwoods, Stinson Beach, fantastic restaurants. Also, ridiculous rents and heavy Highway 101 commute traffic. For natural food snobs we’ve got a total of four Whole Foods markets, and two Good Earth Natural Foods.
If you work in SF but choose not to live in the City, then Sausalito, if you can afford it, is probably the ideal spot; a short hop over the Golden Gate Bridge but a world away from the hustle and bustle. Check out the Bay Model and hang out at street-side coffee shops on Bridgeway Ave. Quick local tip: Many sightseers going north across the Golden Gate Bridge will be tempted to stop at the ultra touristy Vista Point Overlook. But rather than struggle with impossible parking at that first turnoff, keep going to the Point Bonita Lighthouse instead. Still great views, but way less people. Heading north, your next-must visit is the the charming town of Mill Valley. Sure, you can hang out at the town center but don’t forget that the splendid scenery (and challenging hikes) of Mt.Tamalpais are nearby as well. On the east side of highway 101 sits Tiburon/Belvedere, one of the wealthiest suburbs of the SF Bay Area. Park at Blackie’s Pasture and walk the bike path into town; stroll around Main St. in Tiburon, and have a snack or drink. Come back along that beautifully scenic route and pickup your car. Larkspur is a quaint little town a few more miles up the road. One of our favorite restaurants there is Perry’s on Magnolia St.(they also have one in SF) or check out Farmshop in Larkspur Landing Shopping Center. Nature lovers will enjoy the Larkspur Redwoods walking tour. If you are into cycling and want to get off the roads and explore West Marin up close you can start in Sausalito, pedal up through Mill Valley, Larkspur, up Sir Francis Drake to Fairfax and then all the way out to Bonitas. Whew, I’m sweating just thinking about it! Central and Northern Marin San Rafael is Marin’s county seat, where most local government business gets done. Just off the highway, the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Civic Center is an impressive and unique architectural sight. Nearby China Camp State Park is an often overlooked spot to spend a quality afternoon with the family. You may have to bear some rough commutes, but Novato (our home town in northern Marin), has a great quality of life for a San Francisco suburb. In fact, it was rated along with San Rafael as one of the best places to live in the country. It’s a nice sleepy little town with a few notable attractions: Trek Winery (comedy nights are cool), the Hamilton Field History Museum, plenty of open space, and a big Copperfield's Books on Novato Blvd. to loiter in while you peruse the latest magazines. You can even rescue a mutt at the Marin Human Society. Marin County Free Junk Removal Resources Like many San Francisco Bay Area counties, Marin has a goal of Zero Waste. That’s the goal anyways. Recycling has long been, and continues to be a major focus of environmentally conscious Marinites. It’s a challenge however, especially since China now takes so much less of our recycling waste and more of our local landfill space gets used. If you need to dispose of anything that won’t fit in your allotted bin you might want to check with your local provider, whether that be Marin Sanitary, Recology, or your city’s designated refuse pickup service. Generally speaking, anything too large to fit in the bins may require a trip to the dump on Jacoby St in San Rafael, or you’ll need to arrange to have a Marin County junk removal company (like us;) to come by and take care of it. As an aside, if you visit the dump on Jacoby be careful not to run over the wild peacocks that freely roam the grounds!
